Viro padlocks in the Zoo

Zoos have a very specific set of security needs, not only to protect the site itself, but also to ensure the safety of the animals, staff and visitors.

The welfare of animals, some of which are dangerous predators, involves a system of cages and enclosures that have interlocking areas, double enclosed cage doors, sluices, sliding gates and walkways which allow safe zones for staff, all of which need to follow strict guidelines for security.

It was with this in mind, that we set about finding a solution for the local zoo.

They had approached us as they were having issues with security and key control, having accumulated numerous different lock brands and lock types over the years which had become unmanageable and very hard to control and track.

To regain control and standardise the locking options, the security products provided needed to be high quality, reliable and marine grade for their outside enclosures (open to all weather conditions) plus, locks were needed for the administration buildings too.

All locks had to be under one of two key numbers, designated high risk and low risk.

All locks and keys needed to be on a ‘Restricted Key Profile’ meaning the keys had to be authorised by management before being cut and were not available from key cutters and locksmiths.

After several site visits and meetings, Viro Marine Padlocks were recommended under the restricted. PV key profile, plus Viro Euro Cylinders and some Viro Half Euro Padlocks.

All were supplied from stock at JMA Berkhamsted, with the Initial supply for ‘New’ animal enclosures then followed by a roll out across the whole zoo.
