Squire Stronghold® marks 25 years

This year sees the 25th anniversary of Squire’s premium range Stronghold® security brand. It marks a quarter of a century of the very best in British made, heavy-duty, extra high security padlocks.

They don’t get any tougher than Stronghold®, universally recognised as Squire’s most trusted maximum security brand, unrivalled in strength and durability. Stronghold® is a symbol of Squire’s 240-year heritage with long-lasting toughness guaranteed. Introduced in 1998 by the Squire product development team, the first Stronghold® padlock was launched as a trailblazer for setting vital new European CEN standards in the security industry.

Known as the SS50 Stronghold range, it heralded a breakthrough in meeting and exceeding new European CEN standards and a benchmark for the market. Back in the late ‘80s, before Stronghold, it was acknowledged that the market needed more regulated control over misleading and unfounded claims of a padlock’s strength.

The then-new CEN standards for padlocks were designed to rule out confusing misconceptions about the strengths, and weaknesses, of padlocks. That’s when Squire decided to build a padlock that would meet and exceed the requirements of the CEN Extra High security category.  It meant Squire could offer the consumer ‘real’ security that was officially certified.

The first Stronghold padlocks offered a new level of flexibility and choice that was unique to the high security market. No other manufacturer at the time could offer the choice of variants combined with outstanding strength.

Since then, the Stronghold® range has evolved extensively to include ultra-high security padlocks, padbars, chains, and lock and chain sets for commercial use.

Many highlights of Stronghold are the solid hardened steel lock body, electrophoretic anti-corrosion finish, hardened boron alloy steel shackle, anti-drill protection and high corrosion resistance for harsh environments.

That’s why today Squire’s Stronghold® range is approved to the highest global standards, not only by CEN, but also by Sold Secure, LPCB, and supported by Secured by Design.

World’s strongest production padlock

The hero in Squire’s Stronghold range is the super-tough, super heavyweight SS100 padlock, the world’s strongest production padlock.  And the first to achieve LPCB Level SR4, the highest level that any padlock has achieved when tested on its own.

The super heavy-duty SS100CS is universally respected as the world’s strongest production padlock.

It is designed for outdoor use where maximum security and corrosion resistance is a priority.  Locations that are high risk, such as perimeter gates, warehouses, outbuildings, shipping containers, heavy machinery, commercial vehicles and for high value property including motorcycle security at home.

This dual cylinder closed shackle padlock with 100mm wide solid steel lock body is the first ever to achieve the highest Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) SR4 standard (as a stand-alone padlock) and the highest security CEN Grade 6 rating.

Each six-pin cylinder offers 250,000 key differs, when combined they give a total of 625million differs.

One of the many benefits of this dual cylinder padlock is its wide range of uses. It can have ‘same key’ cylinders, where both cylinders operate using the same key.

Or they can be keyed to differ, where the padlock is operated using two different keys.  Both versions can be keyed-alike and master-keyed.

Keys can be held by different people and the lock cannot be opened unless both keys are presented.

Remarkably, the SS100CS weighs a massive 4.3kg of British steel and is capable of a tensile pull of over 24 tonnes (independently tested), equivalent to 18 Volkswagen Golfs or two Routemaster Double Decker buses.

The Stronghold® high security padlock range includes SS100, SS80, SS65, SS50, SS45 and the WS75, and comes in many sizes and shackle variants.

Key features of Squire’s Stronghold range:

  • Extreme corrosion resistant padlock – tested to BS EN12320:2012 Grade 5 for corrosion resistance after being subjected to 480 hours salt spray
  • Highly durable storm proof cover – fully protects the lock body and cylinders from the elements
  • Protective keyhole dust cover – excellent protection against the elements inside the lock
  • Heavy duty, weatherproof, anti-corrosion finish – the black electrophoretic anti-corrosion finish protects the lock body on the inside and the outside giving maximum corrosion protection
  • Hardened boron alloy steel shackle – case hardened boron alloy steel gives maximum anti-cut resistance on the hard outside and anti-twist resistance from the flexible inner core
  • Boron alloy steel is super high-performance steel and is 80% tougher than mild steel. Maximum anti-corrosion satin chrome finish shackle recommended for harsh outdoor conditions
  • Protected closed shackle – virtually total protection for the shackle against all forms of attack. Machined to give a smooth appearance which is easy to handle
  • Open and long shackle variants give extra protection for applications requiring extra flexibility
  • High security cylinder – precision engineered, solid brass 6-pin cylinders with anti-pick and anti-bump features
  • CNC precision manufactured lock body – the case-hardened lock bodies are precision manufactured by Squire on high-performance, cutting-edge CNC machines at its UK operation
  • The market leading tight tolerances that Squire can achieve enables it to outperform all other padlocks of a similar size. The lock body is case hardened on the outside to resist bolt cutter attack and flexible enough at its core to resist twist attack.

Technological innovation is Squire’s trademark, producing some of the world’s most advanced designs in lock making.

All Squire Stronghold products are manufactured using superior design capabilities and the latest production methods.  Importantly, they are tested to global security and fire safety standards to ensure the finest tolerances, reliability and outstanding performance.

What’s new

Latest additions to the Stronghold range include its high security Elite 1™ dimple pin system, STH100 padbar, Sold Secure Silver rated STH3 hasp and staple and Half Euro padlocks.

Squire has made it very easy to integrate the Elite 1 cylinder option to its extra-high security Stronghold® padlock range SS80, SS65, SS50 padlocks and WS75 container lock.

Locksmiths can create keyed alike and master keyed suites using Squire’s range of cylinder types and profiles for Stronghold® padlocks.

Additionally, these padlocks easily accept Euro profile and Scandinavian oval cylinders, as well as NW4 and Stronghold Protected and Restricted cylinders.

The Stronghold® family also includes Squire’s seriously heavy duty STH100 padbar specifically designed for use only with the SS100CS padlock.

The hardened hasp and staple is one of the strongest on the market for extra high security outdoor use.

This CEN grade 6 padbar body is made from a special hardened cast material which makes it ultra-strong against all forms of attack, and the hardened staple rotates for extra resistance.

When used together with Squire’s SS100CS padlock, they achieve the industry leading LPCB SR4 standard.

Squire’s STH3 hasp and staple is designed for extra high security of domestic buildings.  This CEN grade 4 rated hasp and staple fits 13mm shackle padlocks and comes with Secured by Design (SBD) and Sold Secure certification.

Squire’s Stronghold® Half Euro Padlocks accept half euro cylinders with no modification.  Designed to the highest specification, the half euro padlocks are based on the Stronghold® range of CEN grade locks.

These half euro padlocks come in two body widths of 65mm and 55mm, with open shackle and long shackle options.

Squire is committed to following good sustainability practice, by reducing the environmental impacts of all its activities and moving away from plastic packaging to cardboard. That’s why all Stronghold products originally available in retail packs are now available as boxed products.  And they can be displayed in a new counter merchandiser made of sustainable wood materials.
