Advanced Keys offers specialist solution for Ford Transit ignition barrel removal

Removing a seized ignition barrel from a Ford Transit can be one of the more time-consuming jobs an auto locksmith encounters. Worn barrels often jam, making removal difficult using conventional techniques and increasing the risk of damage if the process isn’t carried out with precision.

To help overcome this challenge, Advanced Keys supplies the BBFOR1 ignition barrel removal tool kit from Barrel Buster Tools – a purpose-built solution developed specifically for Ford Transit and Transit Custom models. Designed to provide a controlled and repeatable removal method, the kit helps locksmiths tackle seized ignition barrels efficiently while reducing unnecessary disruption during the job.

Suitable for Ford Transit and Transit Custom vehicles manufactured between 2013 and 2024, the BBFOR1 includes everything needed to carry out the procedure, including an alignment clamp tool, preload alignment plug, two specialist drill bits, and a spring-loaded slide hammer punch tool with replacement ends. Together, these components ensure the barrel is correctly aligned before drilling begins, allowing for an accurate and controlled extraction.

Rather than relying on traditional removal methods, the BBFOR1 follows a structured process that improves accuracy at every stage.

The process in a nutshell:

  • Expose the ignition assembly. Remove the ignition cowling and transceiver ring to access the ignition barrel. Insert the preload alignment plug to correctly position the internal cylinder, then fit and secure the alignment clamp to hold everything in place for accurate drilling.
  • Carry out controlled drilling. Apply lubricant to both the drill bit and the hole before drilling. Pause regularly to clear swarf and maintain a clean, consistent cut throughout the process.
  • Extract the barrel. Once drilling is complete, use the supplied spring-loaded punch tool to release and remove the ignition barrel in a controlled manner.

Adam Boustead, General Manager at Advanced Keys, said: “Ignition barrel failures on these vehicles are something many auto locksmiths come across, so having a dedicated tool for the job can make a real difference. The BBFOR1 gives locksmiths a reliable, repeatable method that helps save time while keeping the removal process controlled from start to finish.

“We’ve had some excellent feedback from customers using the BBFOR1, and we’re continuing to develop specialist tools for other vehicle platforms that present similar challenges. It’s an area we’re investing in because we know these are real-world problems that locksmiths face every day.”

Replacement drill bits and punch tool ends are also available separately, allowing users to keep the kit in service without replacing the complete set.
